Coon Lake Anoka, MN

Our lake - 1,400+ acres of water make Coon lake the largest lake in Anoka County. For you folks who like to fish, Coon twice held the Minnesota State Record for the White Crappie weighing in at 3 lbs. 4oz. Coon is also a great northern and bass lake.
If fishing is not for you, then how about water skiing, jet skiing, boating or pleasently pontooning. How about a good old fashioned picnic at the beach. With over 230' of sandy beach there is plenty of room to picnic or play water volly ball or just relax and read a good book

Lead and Loons

Open water fishing season is right around the corner. When replenishing your tackle, keep in mind that many sinkers and lures contain lead that can be harmful to wildlife.
Lead poisoning of loons, eagles and other wildlife is avoidable. Help us spread the word about safe and effective alternatives to lead tackle. For more information visit www.pca.state.mn.us/sinkers or contact Dan Miller of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency at 651-297-8319, toll free 800-657-3864 or by email at daniel.miller@pca.state.mn.us. We will also have information packets available from the MN PCA at the CLIA Spring General Membership meeting scheduled for May 15, 2008.

The Coon Lake Improvement Association (CLIA) publishes and mails a hard copy newsletter twice per year to keep CLIA members (especially those that do not have email access) up-to-date on lake related issues and to provide a medium for our business sponsors to advertise their product and/or services to the general CLIA membership.

However, our newsletter is simply called the CLIA Newsletter and some board members feel that the CLIA Newsletter should have an identifiable name. If you have a suggestion for a name for CLIA's Newsletter, please submit your suggestion with your name, address and telephone number to the CLIA editors at coonlakeimprovementassociation@yahoo.com by April 5, 2008.

Please submit only one entry per CLIA paid 2008 membership. The member that submits the selected name will receive one of CLIA's custom embroidered beach towels from our apparel committee. If more than one entry includes the identical selected name, the CLIA Newsletter editors will select the winner from a random drawing of those that submitted the identical selected entries.

Another snowfall and yes, another meat raffle today at 4:00 PM. This important fund raiser is held every Saturday at Purple Reign just South of the Coon Lake channel. For only $1.00 per number, per spin, you have an opportunity to win $20.00 worth of fresh packaged meat from Soderquist's Market. 30 numbers are sold for each spin giving you odds of 30:1 to win the prize. We typically play between 12 and 16 games starting at 4:00 PM and finishing at approximately 5:30 PM. We do occasionally also play for a $20.00 gift card. Come to Purple Reign today at 4:00 PM and support Mike Bury's team, CLIA and the Coon Lake Community and Senior Center.

The Coon Lake Improvement Association (CLIA) Board wrestled with options for funding the improvement of Coon Lake, specifically control of Eurasian Water Milfoil (EWM) and decided that the financial and personnel resources required to fight EWM far exceeded the funds and personnel available through CLIA's volunteer organization. Therefore, the CLIA Board voted to establish a Coon Lake Improvement District Advisory Committee (CLID AC) to explore this alternative funding method for the improvement of Coon Lake. A Lake Improvement District (LID) is a local unit of government that provides greater opportunity for property owner involvement in lake management activities. Order #2008-10 became official February 12, 2008 and the Coon Lake Improvement District was formed.

CLIA is now realizing that this effort to establish a lake improvement district was required so that all property owners within the LID contributed equally from a financial perspective. One of the Minnesota DNR requirements to move forward with grants and lake vegetation plans is for the lake to have an up-to-date point intercept lake assessment survey. CLIA first requested lake assessment proposals from five lake assessment professionals noted as "qualified" on the DNR's web site. A sixth request was sent out the following day after I attended a presentation by Wendy Crowell, Minnesota DNR, at the Long Lake Improvement district meeting in Isanti last Saturday.

Our first two replies for a 2008 lake assessment proposal have been received. The first reply noted that they were "basically booked" for 2008 and would not have time to take on a point intercept lake assessment survey for a lake the size of Coon Lake this spring and summer. If they were to complete the survey, estimated cost from this firm was $13,400.00. Our second reply quoted $20,400.00 and is available, prepared and qualified to complete an early spring and late summer survey as required by the DNR.

As you can see, this invasive species is costly and it is also time consuming for the CLIA volunteers to research issues and solutions. We have not made a decision on the lake assessment survey and we certainly hope to see some more cost-effective proposals.

That is why we need all Coon Lake area residents to get involved with addressing issues and finding solutions. Support at our meat raffles on Saturdays at 4:00 PM helps financially and gives you an opportunity to discuss issues with other lake area residents. Stop by Purple Reign this Saturday and support the lake association by playing the meat raffle hosted by Mike Bury's team. We typically play 12-16 spins between 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM. For only $1.00 per number, per game, you have a chance to win $20.00 worth of fresh meat from Soderquist's Market and to support your lake association.

We will continue to update you on lake assessment and other issues via email and our spring 2008 newsletter. Regards, Steven Olson, President, CLIA

The Coon Lake Improvement Association (CLIA) newsletter editor accepts articles relevant to lake issues, Coon Lake, or the Coon Lake area and invites our members to submit their articles for possible publication in our upcoming newsletter. THE APRIL 1, 2008 DEADLINE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

If you have an article to submit, please email your
article to coonlakeimprovementassociation@yahoo.com for consideration. Articles are due by April 1, 2008 for possible publication in May 2008.

The CLIA editor has received a few “Letters to the Editor” over the last couple of years from CLIA members (or perhaps non-members reading someone else’s copy of the CLIA newsletter) regarding satisfaction with or dissatisfaction with the lake association’s efforts to communicate with our members or with the actions of the association. CLIA's editor is open to receiving new ideas, praise or constructive criticism from our membership, but a few simple rules must apply.

All articles and “Letters to the Editor” must include the sender’s name, address, telephone number and date. Letters should be kept to 300 words or less. Articles and letters cannot contain profanity or derogatory terms or phrases, or be libelous. Statements or accounts must be verifiable by the editor.

The editor retains the right to edit or to not print a particular piece. The editor does not guarantee a response to all letters received, but will make every effort to reply. The views expressed in a “Letter to the Editor” do not necessarily reflect the position of CLIA or it’s board.

To submit a letter to the editor, please email a copy to coonlakeimprovementassociation@yahoo.com.
